On Love at First Sight

 Introduction

I believe that love is a real quality. I believe in love at first sight—a moment when one person perceives a stranger and experiences the sense of being in love with them, or when two strangers meet and that feeling is mutually perceived. This brief reflection provides a metaphor for something which is sometimes hard to believe.

 Reflection

We have a board with twenty round holes in it. We have twenty balls each of which will just fit into any of the holes in the board. We throw the balls at the board and every one goes into a hole. We are amazed. How could such a thing happen? Well, it can. There is nothing out of this world about such a thing happening—it has a coherent base—it is simply unusual, or fast, or more coincidental than we like to believe, but it has rational coherence. It did happen—it was not magic, nor a miracle, it is just hard to believe. Love at first sight!

 Comments

Sometimes a reflection takes us into completely new territory, sometimes it confirms or refutes what we already think. Sometimes it provides a different way of looking at something which we find otherwise hard to explain, unexplainable or something for which, at the moment, we do not want explained. There has to be some magic in life—something which makes us sit on the edge of our seat in wonder. Recently, I stood in an art gallery staring endlessly at Renoir’s At the Theatre and saw in it just that sense of wonder. Sometimes it is unwise to try and explain away something of the magic of the world to which we are all a part, and all beholding. We do not spend much time trying to explain happiness with the aim of finding that there is truly no such thing. We should not attempt to explain the magic of love by a rational effort which has no purpose other than to destroy.
