And I awake.
Am I awake?
Yes—from sleep, from darkness, from dreaming.
And I reach across.
And yes, you’re there.
And I feel your warmth.
And I feel the safety of knowing you’re there.
And so I think of being with you—just doing the things we readily do:
Enjoying each other,
Kissing,
Holding hands,
Making love,
Snuggling up,
Lying together in bed,
Sleeping sometimes,
Sometimes lying awake,
Laughing at silly things,
Listening to each other about serious things,
Exchanging ideas,
Learning from each other,
Seeing things the same way,
Thinking of things at the same time,
Smiling,
Seeing, or thinking about something that makes us both laugh,
Telling each other, ‘I love you.’
Yes, I am awake.
But when I sleep again, I might dream that you’re not there.
And so I’ll miss you.
And that’s good, because I’ll want to be with you again.
And so, even if I miss you, I’ll want to feel you beside me, and me beside you.
And awake or dreaming, I want to know that you’re always there, because when I dream I want to miss you, and when I’m awake I want to ask you if you’re awake, and if you’re okay.
But now I am awake again.
And yes, sweet, you’re there.
So sleep well;,
And if you awake, then think of all those good things that are between us.
And know that when I awake, or when I dream, you are all that I am thinking about.
